All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ Catherine JOYNER DUNKLEY (1716-1758), will dated 12 Apr 1758, proved 9 Nov 1758 In the name of God amen I Catherine Dunkley of the county of Southampton being of sound and disposing mind and memory do make this my last will and testament in a manner and form following. First: I recommend my soul to almighty God and trust for its salvation on the mediation of my blessed Saviour. My body I recommend to the discression(sic) of my executors hereafter named my worldly estate I dispose as follows. I give and bequeath unto my brother in law Moses Dunkley the plantation whereon I now live containing two hundred and fifty acres or thereabouts to him the said Moses Dunkley his heirs and assigns forever. I also give to the said Moses Dunkley the sum of fifteen pounds and I do hereby order and direct that my negro woman Jenny /who I purchased of John Ingram/ be sold by my executors and the money arising by the sale thereof together with the said fifteen pounds be paid by the said executor to the said Moses Dunkley. Also I give and bequeath to Ralph Dunkley son of Moses Dunkley the lands and plantation commonly called Hodges and purchased by my late husband of one John Hodges containing about one hundred and fifty acres to hold to the said Ralph Dunkley his heirs and assigns forever. Also I give and bequeath unto Thomas Joyner son of Jonathan Joyner my negro man slave named Mial. Also I give unto Mathew Joyner my negro slave Joyce and her child Sarah and all their future increase. Also I give and bequeath to my brother Thomas Joyner my negro slave Sam. Also I give unto my brother Joel Joyner my negro slave named Jenny. Also I give unto my uncle Benjamin Joyner six pounds current money. Also I give and bequeath unto my sister Elizabeth Boykin the wife of John Boykin my negro woman /commonly called/ Great Jenny and my negro boy Charles. Also I give and bequeath unto my sister Cherry Boykin /the wife of John Boykin of the province of North Carolina/ my negro slave called Abraham. Also I give and bequeath unto my sister Patience Hodges my negro slave called Isaac. Also I hereby order and direct that my executor hereafter named do make sale of negro man Peter at public outcry and that they do pay and discharge with the money arising thereby all my just debts and that the over plush /if any/ be divided in the same manner and accounted as the residue of my estate. All the residue and remainder of my estate of what nature or kind soever whether real personal or mixt I give devise and bequeath to be equally divided among the following persons Cherry Boykin, Patience Hodges, Elizabeth Boykin, Ralph Dunkley and the five children of Jona' Joyner to wit Patience, Alexander, Mary, David and Jonathan which said five children are not to take respectively or severally but to be accounted as one only of the residuary legatees. Lastly I do constitute and appoint my brother Thomas Joyner, Matthew Joyner and John Boykin of the county of Southampton to be the executors of this my last will and testament hereby revoking all other wills by me heretofore made. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this twelfth day of April in the year of our Lord Christ one thousand seven hundred and fifty eight.
