SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY, VA - WILLS AND ESTATES - Thomas Davis --------------¤¤¤¤¤¤-------------- IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN I Thomas Davis of Southampton County in Virginia of perfect mind and memory, thanks be given unto God, calling into mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die, do make and ordain this my last will and testament. That is to say: Principally and first of all I give and recommend my soul into the hands of almighty God that gave it and my body I recommend to the earth to be buried in decent christian burial at the discression of my Executor, nothing doubting but at the general resurrection I shall receive the same again by the mighty power of God and is touching such worldly estate where with it hath pleased God to bless me with in this life, I give devise and dispose of the same in the following manner and form: First, I give and bequeath to Henry Davis Sr my well beloved uncle, two negroe girls in North Carrolina in Northampton County Hannah and Lettice providedly after my death he bring each of the two said girls Hannah and Lettice in Virginia, give each of them nine months schooling and manumit them at the age of twenty one years of age. Hannah was born July 1777. Lettice was born December 1781 and will be free in 1802; Hannah in 1798. 2d ly, after debts and just expences is paid if any thing remains I leave it to be equally divided between my two well beloved brothers Etheldred Davis and James Davis. 3d ly, It is my will and desire that my uncle Henry Davis be my Executor to this my Last Will and Testament & if he should die, I leave it in power to choose some other person to act in his stead. I direct that there be no appraisement. Teste: Joel Davis Phillip Davis At a Court held for the County of Southampton the 13th day of October 1791 This Will was presented in Court by Henry Davis, the Executor therein named, proved by the oaths of Phillip Davis, one of the witnesses thereto named and ordered to be recorded and on the motion of the said Executor who made oath according to law, certificate is granted him for obtaining a Probat thereof in due form giving security whereupon &c.
