SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY, VA - WILLS AND ESTATES - William Edmunds, 30 Sep 1799 --------------¤¤¤¤¤¤-------------- IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN, I William Edmunds of Southampton County being of sound and disposisng mind and memory, thanks be to almighty God for the same, do make this my last will and testament in manner following (to wit): I leave the use of my plantation whereon I now live to my loveing wife Martha Edmunds during her life or widowhood together with the following slaves (to wit): Phinney?, Abba, Delia, Doll, Lewis, Stephen, Ione, Case & Jess, also Cooper & Austine, also two choice beds & furniture, two choice horses, kind? ten head of choice cattle, all my sheep, half of hogs, one half of all my crop, together with the whole of my household & kitchen furniture, plantation utensils and either my Pheston? or Surgle? riding chair and one barrell of brandy, also my copper still & cap with all my hogsheads, 4 barrells that hold cyder. Item: I give to my daughter Susan Edmunds one negro girl call'd Sarah, one side saddle & bridle. I give to my son David H. Edmunds after the death or marriage of my wife, the plantation whereon I now live with the household & kitchen furniture therein contained, legacies excepted, also one negro girl called Fanny. I give unto my son George B. Edmunds one acre of land I purchased of Isack Johnson & one negro boy named Jess and that the balance of my negroes be hired out until my daughter Susan marries or arives to the age of twenty years old and then for that part not otherwise directed to be divided equally between my surviving children, my desire is that Ruth and her two children (Anthony and Judea) be sold and the money arising from the sale together with the amount of the other part of my saleable property to be for the use of discharging my debts, the balance of my whole estate to be divided between my children, such as has not bin before given. I appoint my loving wife Martha Edmunds my whole & sole Executrix to this my Last Will and Testament. IN WITNESS whereof I have hereunto set my hand & seal this 30th day of September 1799. William Edmunds (seal) Test Edward Fisher At a Court held for the County of Southampton the 19th day of October 1801 This Will was presented in court by Benjamin Blunt Sr, Administrator (the widow refusing to qualify as Executor) proved by the oath of Edward Fisher, a witness thereto & ordered to be recorded.
