SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY, VA - WILLS AND ESTATES - Matthew Gardner, 7 Aug 1797 --------------¤¤¤¤¤¤-------------- IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN, I Matthew Gardner Sr of Southampton County, State of Virginia, being weak in boddy at present but of sound and perfect mind and memory, thanks be to almighty God for the same, and calling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing it is appointed for all to die, do make and ordain this my last will and testament, vizt: First of all, I desire that all my debts and funeral charges be paid and discharged. Item: I give and bequeath unto my son Matthew Gardner and his heirs forever, the plantation whereon I now live with four hundred acres land, more or less, one hors which is in his possession. Item: I give and bequeath unto my son Etheldred Gardner and his heirs forever, the plantation whereon I now live with the rest of my out lands containing four hundred and eighteen acres of land, more or less and thirty seven acres of land out of the tract I left to my son Matthew, I lend to my son Etheldred for twelve year one negro man Lewis and one horse nam'd Fox and twenty pounds cash. Item: I give and bequeath unto my daughter Elizabeth Daughtry, the wife of Matthew Daughtry, and her heirs forever, one negro girl named Hanner that I purchased of David Edmunds & fifteen pounds cash. Item: I give and bequeath unto my daughter Lucreasey? Daughtry, the wife of Theophilus Daughtry and her heirs forever, one negro girl named Cherry. Item: I give and bequeath unto my daughter Mitchi Wester and her heirs forever, one negro woman named Selna and twenty five pounds cash & horse called Iron. Item: I give and bequeath unto my daughter Mary Guardner and her heirs forever, one negro girl named Edna, one horse called Monert, one feather bed and furniture and six pounds cash. Iem: I give and bequeath unto my daughter Julieberry Gardner and her heirs forever five pounds cash. Lastly, my will an ddesire that my Executors after my death do equally divide the Estate then remaining with the negroes and whole of my crop betwixt five of my children, (vizt): Matthew Gardner, Etheldred Gardner, Elizabeth Daughtry, Lucrecasey Daughtry and Mary Gardner. I likewise constitute and appoint my two sons Matthew Gardner and Etheldred Gardner the whole and sole Executors of this my Last Will and Testament given under my hand and seal this 7th day of August one thousand seven hundred & ninety seven.
