All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ Amos HARRIS, will dated 15 Jul 1785, proved 10 Sep 1789 Amos Harrisses Will In the name of God amen I Amos Harris of the parish of St. Lukes in the County of Southampton being weak of body of sound mind and memory do this fifteenth day of July in the Year of our lord one thousand seven hundred and eighty five make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner following. Imprimis I give and bequeath unto my two Sons William and West Harriss and to their heirs and assigns forever my tract of land lying on the south side of the three Creeks called the great water Tract Containing five hundred and seventy acres be the same more or less I say the above said land to be in equal division between my aforesaid Sons and that my friends Joshua Thorpe John Applewhite and Arthur Applewhite set apart and make division of said land in such manner William may have the lower part and West the upper part and with all for each to have the benefit of the Creek Item I give and bequeath unto my two Younger Sons Amos and Henry Harris to them and their heirs forever my two plantations Viz. the one whereon I now live and the other whereon James Wentworth now liveth with all the lands there unto belonging and to be divided by a direct line from the head of the Spring Meadow to a pine in the head of a branch called the little branch Henry to have the home plantation whereon I live and Amos to have the other part but in case either dies before they arrive to lawful age the survivor to have the whole land Item I give unto my four daughters Viz. Mary McKenny Salley Rebecca and Patience Harris to each a feather bed and furniture Item I desire and direct that my Negro man George may be continued on the Plantation whereon I live for the support and education of my three youngest Children Viz Amos, Patience and Henry till Henry arrives at lawful age at which time I give the said Negro George to my Son Henry & to his heirs forever Item I give and devise the remainder and residue of my estate of what nature or quallity soever and wheresoever found may be Sold at publick Sale and the money arising there from may be equally divided among all my Children Viz. Mary McKenney, Ann Horn, William Harris, Salley Harris, West Harris, Rebecca Harris, Amos Harris, Patience Harris, and Henry Harris Lastly I do appoint my friend Joshua Thorp my Son William Harris and my nephew Arthur Applewhite executors of this my last Will & Testament in Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my Seal on the Day and Year as above written Signed Sealed published and Declared in presence of Thomas Peete Amos Harris (seal) Joshua Thorpe X (Mark of William Johnson) At a court held for the county of Southampton the 10th day of Sept 1789 This will was presented in Court by Wm Harriss and Arthur Applewhite two of the executors therein named (Joshua Thorpe the other refusing) Proved by the oaths of Thomas Peete and Joshua Thorpe two of the witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded and on the motion of the said executors who made oath according to law Certificate is granted them for obtaining a probat thereof in due form giving Security whereupon &c Southampton Co., VA, Will Book 4 (1783-1797), pp. 325-327 [At a Court held for Southampton County the 10th day of Sept. 1789.] The Last Will of Amos Harriss decd: provd. by 2 wit: &c Ex'ors: qualified Admon granted they havg: given bond &c. ___ Joshua Thorpe 1.
