All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ Spencer JENKINS, will, 29 Mar 1788 (pr'd 11 Sep 1788) [margin note] Spencer Jenkins Will In the name of God Amen I Spencer Jenkins of the County of South=== =ampton being of sound mind and memory and knowing the uncertainty of this life do constitute make and ordain this my last will and testament Imprimis I recommend my soul to God almighty to take to himself into that mansion of eternal and incomparable filicity which he has prepared for all those who love and fear his name Blessed be god Amen ~ Item I commit my body to the earth from whence it came in stedfast hope of a resurrection to eternal happiness and after my funeral expences are paid and my just creditors satis= =fied I desire my Estate to be divided in the following manner - Imprimis I give the use of my negroes namely Joan, Pate, Peter, and Dick the son of Peter & their increase unto my loving Wife Ann Jenkins during her life I also give the use of my Plantation whereon I now live together with all my stock and houshold fur= =niture and every other Article of my hole estate except the negroes hereafter men= =tioned to her during her natural life _ Item I desire that my land above mentiond may at the death of my wife Ann Jenkins be equally divided between my two Sons Jesse and William to them and their heirs forever but the one who hath the Houses and improvements shall pay the other the sum of thirty pounds out of his part of the estate to enable him to build and improve his part, if my said Sons should not agree in the division of the Land it is my desire that they may appoint indifferent people to determine and divide the said Land Item I now give to my Son Jesse Jenkins my Negroes named Guinea and Judith and her increase also one Horse commonly called by the name of Mark Anthony together with my BlackSmiths Tools and one Feather bed to him and his heirs for ever _ Item I give to my Son William Jenkins my Negroes named David and Pegg and her increase together with one horse called and known by the name of Dimond also one feather bed to him and his heirs for ever _ [page break] [p.] 271 Item I give to my Daughter Sally Britt the use of my Negro Girl Jenny and her increase but not to be in Possession untill the Death of my wife Ann Jenkins to her and her heirs for ever also one feather bed Item I give to my Daughter Molly Williford the use of my Negro Girl Hagar and her increase but not to be in Possession untill the death of my above mentioned Wife to her and her Heirs forever also one feather Bed Item I give to my Daughter Betsey Jenkins my Negroes named London and Lucy and her increase but not to be in Possession untill the death of the aforesaid wife to her and her Heirs forever also one Feather Bed _ Lastly It is my Will and desire that after the Death of my wife that the increase of those Negroes not now particularly mentioned or devised to my children seperate from those to her may be equally divided between my two Sons Jesse Jenkins and William Jenkins, to them and their heirs forever together with their future increase - The remainder of my Estate at the death of my wife Ann Jenkins; I desire may be equally divided between my said children Jesse Jenkins, William Jenkins, Sally Britt, Molly Williford, and Betsey Jenkins to them and their heirs forever And I do hereby appoint my wife Ann Jenkins Executrix and my two Sons Jesse and William Jenkins Executors of this my last will and Testament and I do hereby revoke and annull all wills by me heretofore made In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my Seal this 29th. day of March and in the Year of our Lord 1788 ~ Signed Sealed and delivered} in the Presence of } Spencer Jenkins ¤sl¤ Hartwell Cocke } John Andrews - At a Court held for the County of Southampton the 11th day of September 1788.
