All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ Joshua JOYNER (1699-1767), will dated 6 Jan 1763, proved 12 Feb 1767 I Joshua Joyner of Southampton county in Virginia being in health of body and perfect mind and memory and calling to mind the uncertainty of this life and that it is appropriate for all men to die do think proper to make constitute and ordain this my last will and testament in manner and form following. To wit: Item I give devise and bequeath unto my dear and loving wife Mary the use and profit of my plantation whereon I now live together with the use profit and labour of my negro man slave named Toney for and during the term of her widowhood also the use profit and labour of the two following slaves to wit Joan and Peg with all the remainder of my estate of what nature or kind soever (except the legacies which I hereafter bequeath) for and during the term of her natural life of them the above mentioned negroes Joan and Peg and their [blank] and what other estate may be remaining to be equally divided between my five children as hereto named John, Nathan, Jonas, Britain and Judith. Item I give devise and bequeath unto my son John Joyner the plantation and lands whereon he now lives containing one hundred and twenty five acres also my negro boy slave named Mingo to him and his heirs forever. Item I give devise and bequeath unto my son Nathan Joyner the plantation and lands whereon he now lives containing one hundred and twenty acres more or less also a negro girl slave named Hannah to him and his heirs forever. [Item] I give devise and bequeath unto my son Jonas Joyner the plantation and lands whereon he now lives containing one hundred and twenty acres be the same more or less also one negro boy slave named Jimmy to him and his heirs forever. Item I give devise and bequeath unto my son Britain Joyner the plantation and lands whereon I now live containing one hundred and fifty acres more or less only reserving his mothers life therein. Also I give to him one negroe girl slave named Rose and one negroe man slave named Toney only reserving to his mother the use and profit of the said slave till the day of her marriage or death also one feather bed and furniture one horse bridle and saddle three two year old heifers, and one gun to him and his heirs forever. Item I give devise and bequeath unto my daughter Elizabeth Williams the sum of five shillings current money to her and her heirs. Item I give devise and bequeath unto my grandson Walter Williams my negro man slave named Will to him and his heirs forever. Item I give devise and bequeath unto my daughter Mary Joyner the sum of five shillings current money to her and her heirs. Item I give devise and bequeath unto my daughter Judith Joyner one negroe boy slave named Robin, one feather bed and furniture, and one cows and calf to her and heirs forever. And lastly I nominate and appoint my son John Joyner and my friend Job Wright to be my executors to this my last will and testament as witness my hand and seal this sixth day of January 1763 Joshua (his mark) Joyner Witness James Jordan Scott Job Wright John (his mark) OBerry At a Court held for the County of Southampton the 12th of February 1767- This Will was presented in court by John Joyner one of the executors therein named and proved by the solemn affirmation of James Jordan Scott (one of the people called Quakers) and by the oath of Job Wright two of the witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded.
