All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ Joshua JOYNER, Sr. (1739-1797), will dated 14 Sep 1783, proved 15 May 1797 IN THE NAME OF GOD Amen, (I) Joshua Joyner of the county of Southampton and Parish of Nottoway, being of sound perfect & disposing mind and memory & calling to mind the uncertainty of this transitory life and know that it is appointed for all men once to die, do think proper to make this my last will and testament in manner & form as follows (to wit): First: I give and bequeath to my son John Joyner one hundred and fifty acres of land bounded as follows: Beginning at the mouth of the Cypress Swamp up the Swamp Jack's Branch, up the branch to the line, up the line to the head of the bull Poqoson branch, down the said branch to the mouth, thence by a line of marked trees to the fork of Taylors gut, from thence to the beginning, to him and his heirs also my coopers tools. Item: I give & bequeath to my (son) Joshua Joyner one hundred & fifty acres of land bounded as follows: beginning at Taylors gut from thence to the fork of the bull Pocoson and Jacks branch, down the said branch to the back river, up the back river to the main black water river, up Black water to the beginning, to him and his heirs, also I give to my said son one gun. Item: I give and bequeath to my son Drewry Joyner one hundred acres of land bounded as follows: beginning at the horse pond branch at the line, down the branch to the mouth of the Little Run, up the Run to the line, then (along) the line to the beginning, also one gun, one feather bed & furniture, and as much of my pewter as I have given to either of my children as has left me to him and his heirs. Item: I give and bequeath to my son Nelson Joyner one hundred acres of land bounded as follows: beginning at the little run, up the run to the line thence line to the trough branches, down the branch to the black water two thirds of the Island excepted as it is my desire that my sons Drewry Joyner & Elisha Joyner shall have an equal share in the said Island land with my son Nelson Joyner. Also I give to my son Nelson Joyner one feather bed and furniture and as much of my pewter as I have given to either of my children as has left me, also one cow & calf. Item: I give & bequeath to my son Elisha Joyner one hundred acres of land bounded as follows: beginning at the back river from thence to Jacks branch, up the said branch to the maple branch, up the maple branch to the line, up the line to the horse branch, to him and his heirs, also one cow & calf, one feather bed & furniture and as much of my pewter as I have given to either of my children as has left me. Item: I give and bequeath to my daughter Fereby Joyner one bed & furniture & an equal part of my pewter with either of my children as left me & one cow & calf. Item: I give and bequeath to my daughter Edith Joyner one feather bed and furniture, one cow and calf, an equal part of my pewter with either of my children as left me. Item: (I) Lend all the rest of my estate not already mentioned to my loving wife Martha Joyner during her life or widowhood, and at her death or marriage, it is my desire that one half of the estate as I have lent to my wife be equally divided between my youngest sons (that is to say) Drewry Nelson & Elisha and the other half to be divided among all my eight children. Lastly, I do hereby nominate, constitute, ordain and appoint my son John Joyner and my son Joshua Joyner my hole and sole Executors of this my Last Will and Testament. IN WITNESS whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this fourteenth day of September in the year of our Lord Christ one thousand seven hundred and eighty three.
