SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY, VA - WILLS AND ESTATES - Fortunatus Jarrott, 1795 --------------¤¤¤¤¤¤-------------- IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN, I Fortunatus Jarrott of the State of Virginia & County of Southampton being sick & weak in body but of perfect mind & memory, thanks be to God for it, but calling to mind that it is appointed for all men one (once) to die do make & ordain this my last will & testament, that is to say: principally & first of all, I recommend my soul into the hands of God that gave it & for my body I recommend to the earth to be buried in a christian like manner at the discretion of my Executors & as touching such worldy estate as it hath pleased God to bless in this life, I dispose of in the following manner: First of all my debts and funeral charges are paid and satisfied. Item: I give and bequeath to my brother John Jarrott one negro boy named Abraham & one hundred dollars & my clois (clothes?) may be divided equally between John Jarrott & William Peoples. Item: I give and bequeath to William Peoples daughter daughter Susanna Peoples, one negro boy named Charles. (word daughter appears twice) Item: I give and bequeath to Henry Bellson of George Psh? (parish?) the piece of land that I had of Benjamin Wheeler, one hundred acres, more or less. Item: I give and bequeath to my sister Nancy Jarrott one neg. boy by the name of Ephraim, one negro girl by the name of Francis and one neg. girl named Silvy, and the residue of my whole estate to her. The Commonwealth of Virginia to Joel Lane, presiding judge of the Court of Wake County, state of North Carolina, greeting or in his absence to any other person as by the laws of the state are authorized to administer an oath. KNOW YE that we trusting to your fidelity & provident circumspection in diligently examining Wiley Hopkins and Joseph Hopkins, witnesses to the Last Will and Testament of Fortunatus Jarrott, dec'd, whether they saw the said Fortunatus Jarrott sign & publish the writing hereunto annexed as his Last Will and Testament and whether he was of disposing mind & memory and they subscrib'd their names thereto in his presence, and their examination so taken in the holy evangelist of almighty God into to the court aforesaid county of Southampton without delay you shall send certified under your hands & seals sending to us the said Last Will & Testament and this writ witness Samuel Kello, clerk of our said court at the court house, the 5 day of March 1795 in the 19th year of our foundation. Carolina Wake County This day Josess Hopkins appeared before me of the Justice of Pecs (Peace?) for said county & made oath that he saw Fortunatus Jarrott sign said and acnowledg the annex'd Will to be his Last Will & Testament & that he believes the said Jarrott was of sound mind & memory & that he said Hopkins did sign his name to the annex'd Will March the 13 1795 David Norfton, J.P. At a Court held for the County of Southampton the 8th day of January 1795 This Will was prov'd by the oath of William Peebles, one of the witnesses thereto And At a Court held for the County of Southampton the 9th day of April 1795 The said Will was further prov'd by the deposition of Joseph Hopkins, another of the witnesses which was taken under a commission issuing from this court which is hereto annexed, & with the Will is ordered to be recorded. And on the motion of John Jarrott who made oath according to law administered with the Will annexed, is granted him on his giving security whereupon &c. Sam Kello, Cl.
