I leave to Capt. Geo. A. W. Neusom (one of the few friends I have found in Southampton County) the charge of all my affairs. I request him to bury my body decently - & to this and, request that he and John W. Rochelle will use their best endeavours. P. S. I here add my obituary notice Died in Jerusalem Southampton County. John Murdaugh, a Lawyer, and a most miserable man. _ Please pay my debts. I owe very little. Something to Capt. Neusom " to Wm. T. Young of Warrick " to Fred Hall of Suffolk " to the Crawford House in Portsmouth My little clothing & things to my brother Edmund I owe Major Edwards a writ tax Account I wish particularly to be burried in my old Drab Coat Be sure to publish my obituary notice as above- I transcribe it so that you will "Died in Jerusalem, Southampton County, John Murdaugh, a Lawyer, and a most miserale(sic) man. Love, Liquor and Laudanum are the Trinity of his worship." Several persons are in debt to me. Col. Rochellle $ 10.00 Capt. Smith 35.00 I. or old Mr Pretlow 20.00 Jos T. Claud admin of Theophilus Barnes} and others } 5.00 I leave my best regard for Capt. Neusom & family- for Mrs. Rochelle & family (see my Manuscript poems _.._), for Dr. Mingo & others. But Death so soon approaches that I have not time to say more. I die forging(sic) and, I hope, forgiven.- John Murdaugh At a court held for the County of Southampton the 21st day of August 1843 A writing bearing date March 25th 1843 purporting the last will and Testament of John Murdaugh, was produced to the Court, and there being no subscribing witness thereto William S. Goodwyn and E. Dwight Nash being sworn severally deposed and said that they were well acquainted with the hand writing of the said John Murdaugh & verily believe that the body of the said writing, as well as the signature thereto to be wholly in the hand writing of the said John Murdaugh, and the Court being thereof satisfied, it is ordered that the said writing be recorded as and for the last will & T estament of the said John Murdaugh dec.d And on the motion of George A. W. Neusom the executor therein named who made oath & together with John M. Gurley & John R. Williams his securities entered into & acknowledged a bond in the penalty of One Thousand dollars, conditioned as the Law directs certificate is Granted him for obtaining a probat of said Will in due form.
