SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY, VA - WILLS AND ESTATES - Charles Nicholson, 7 Aug 1798 --------------¤¤¤¤¤¤-------------- I, CHARLES NICHOLSON being of sound mind and perfect memory do make and ordain this my last will and testament. Imprimis: I desire tht my land in Southampton with all my present estate be sold in a credit at the discretion of my Executors, as much as is necessary of which to be applied to the payment of my debts. Item: From a thorough conviction that slavery and oppression are inconsistent with the Will of the God of Justice and Mercy, I hereby emancipate the following negroes, to wit: Daphne, Lettise, Cain, Stuart, Alek, Sharper, Judith, Amy and all other negroes to whom I have or may hereafter have any right. All the balance of my estate I give to my father of which he will _________the within named Daphne a comfortable maintenance during life ______ except that I give all the within named negroes a legacy of ten pounds each. I appoint my father Harris Nicholson and Doctor Anselm Bailey Jr Executors of this my Last Will. Given under my hand and seal this twenty seventh day of August one thousand seven hundred and ninety eight.
