All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ Stephen POPE (1710-1760), will dated 27 Jun 1760, proved 11 Sep 1760; & wife Martha (VICK) POPE {later BRANTLEY} (1712-1783), renunciation of husband's will, dated 12 Mar 1761, proved 7 Apr 1761 In the name of God Amen the 27th day of June in the year of our Lord 1760 I Stephen Pope of the County of Southamton being sick & weak in Body but of sound & Perfect memory thanks be to Almighty God for the same do make & ordain this to be my last Will & Testament in form following (viz) Imprimis I give & demise to Israel Joyner one Hundred Acres of Land joining his own land & Arthur Popes to him and his Heirs forever___ Item I give & demise to my son Brittain Pope & his heirs forever all the remaining Part of my land I am Possest with his mothers life Excepted in the Plantation where I now live & then to return to my said son & his heirs forever_ Item I give & demise four negro & their Increase (viz:) Tryal (sic) Hannah Lucy & Mingo to be equally divided Between my son Brittain & my daughters Charity & Anne Pope when my daughter Charity marries or comes to the Age of twenty one years and if she die unmarried & under the Age Aforesaid then to be divided between Britain and Anne when Brittain comes to the Age of Twenty one__ Item I give & bequeath to my loving wife Martha Pope the Labour of two negros, viz, Jimbo & Saul during her widowhood & when she marrys or or[dupe] dies' then the two negros & their Increase be divided between all my Children aforesaid___ Item I give & bequeath all the residue of my Estate of all kinds after my debs is paid to be eaqually divided between my wife & Children the Crop on the Ground Excepted which I leave for the support of my Family. I also Appoint my loving wife & my neighbour Howell Edmunds to be my Ex'ors of this my last Will & Testament. Pope Jesse Pope At a Court held for the County of Southampton the 11th day of September 1760 This Will was Presented in Court by Howell Edmunds one of the Ex'rs herein named the other Ex'or refusing to Join in the Probat thereof. Proved by the Oaths of John Pope & Jesse Pope two of the Witnesses thereto & ordered to be Recorded. And on the motion of the said Ex'or who made Oath According to Law Certificate is granted him for Obtaining a Probat in due form giving Security Whereupon &c _ Tes R. Kello Cl ******************************************************************************** Renounciation I Do hereby Declare That I will not accept receive or take the Legacy or Legacies that is given & bequeathed to me by the last Will & Testament of late Husband Stephen Pope dec'ed and I do hereby renounce all Benefit & Advantage which I may or Can Claim by such last Will.
