All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ Robert RICKS (Sr.), will 25 Jul 1764 (proved 12 Oct 1764); estate inventory & appraisement 11 Oct 1764 (returned 12 Jul 1770) [margin notes] Rob.t Ricks's Will ~~~ I Robert Ricks of Southampton county being at present weak in body but of perfect sense and memory do make and ordain this my last will [&] Testament in form following First I leave unto my loving wife Mary Ricks the use of my plantation whereon I now live with one half the land I hold on the north side of Conscory Branch [I] likewise give her the use of two negro's named Peter & Jacob all of which I leave to her during her widowhood and no longer now if my said wife should dispossess herself of the above named two negroes any time from the date of these presents in twelve years the said two Negroes shall be hir'd out out for the best price that [page break] [p.] 104 can be got, and the money arising thereon to be equally devided each year among all my children, now if my said wife should not dispossess herself of the above named two negroes till after twelve years from the date of these presents and then do then I give the said two negroes Peter and Jacob to be equally devided between my two Sons Richard Ricks and Joseph Ricks likewise if she should dispossess herself of them at any time between this and twelve Years I give and bequeath them as above to my two sons but still desire they should be hired out till twelve years is expired from the date of these presents likewise I give her the use of four negroes and there [sic] increase during her life, namely old peter, Jane, Hannah and Bess, it is likewise my desire that if my said wife should depart this world in less than twelve years that the said four negroes and there increase should be hired out for the best price that can be got and the money arising thereon to be equally devided amongst all my children from the date of these presents till that time be expired. I further give at the death of my wife the aforesaid Four Negroes Named old peter Jane Hannah and Bess and there Increase to my two sons Richard Ricks and Robert Ricks to them and to there Heirs and Assigns forever. I likewise give my wife two beds & furniture two Cows and calves one mare called Bonnie with a side Saddle and bridle which beds furniture Cows calves Horse bridle and saddle I give to her and to her Heirs and Assigns forever._ Secondly I give and bequeath unto my son Thomas Ricks all my land that lies on the west side of Masons Road and one negro Boy named will all and every part thereof I give to him his heirs and assigns forever._ Thirdly I give and bequeath unto my son Robert Ricks Half the land I hold on the north side of conscory Branch and after the widowhood of my wife I give him the other half with [page break] [p.] 105 the plantation whereon I now live. likewise I give him one negro boy named Jamy one young mare called fly, one new bridle and Saddle all and every part thereof I give to him his heirs and assigns forever._ Fourthly I give and bequeath unto my son Richard Ricks the land bounded as followeth beginning at a pine a corner tree of Richard Ricks's land then running a straight line across the the Hucklebary pocosin to the head of Pretlows branch then down the said branch to a white oak from thence to flagg swamp then down the said swamp to a Cypress a corner tree of Richard Ricks's line then round the said Rick's line to the beginning likewise I give him one negro boy named Jack all and every part of both land and negro I give to him and to his heirs and assigns forever Fifthly I give and bequeath unto my son Joseph Ricks all my land on the south side of Conscory Branch that I have not already given away likewise one negro boy named Ned all and every part of both land and negro I give to him and to his heirs and assigns forever. Sixthly I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Mary Ricks one negro Girl named Jude [sic; Judy] to, her and to her heirs and assigns forever likewise I give her five pounds cash.
