SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY, VA - WILLS AND ESTATES - Edwin Seward, 27 Jan 1796 --------------¤¤¤¤¤¤-------------- IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN, I Edwin Seward of Southampton County being of sound and disposing mind and memory do make and ordain this my last will and testament in manner & form following: First and formost, I recommend my soul to almighty God who gave it, and my body to be decently buried by my Executors hereafter to be mentioned in hope of a joyfull resurrection of the same. And as to what worldly goods it hath been pleased almighty God to bestow on me, I dispose of as follows (to witt): Item, I give and bequeath to my nephew Caufield Seward one gold watch which he has now in possession to him & his heirs forever. Item, I lend to my mother Sarah Thorp during her natural life one negro girl named Charity which she has now in possession and all her future increase and after her, my said mothers', death to be divided as hereafter mentioned. Item, I lend the use of all the rest of my estate both real & personal in whatsoever manner it lie or may be found either in law? or equity to my mother Sarah Thorp for & during her natural life. My desire is that my Executors hereafter to be mentioned shall buy with cash in hand and money due me, three negro boys (men boys) at about forty, fifty or sixty pound prices as you may think best at that time - which I lend the use of the said negro boys to my mother Sarah Thorp as above mentioned and the balance of cash for her to lay out for necessaries as she may think proper during her natural life - and after her my said mothers death to be divided as follows (to witt): Item, I lend the use of two thirds of my estate lent to my said mother Sarah Thorp, after the death of my said mother, to my sister Mary Harris provided she, my said sister, be left a widow for and during her widowhood and then and there to be equally divided among all my said sisters' surviving children to them & their heirs forever, provided my sister be not a widow at the death of my mother. Item, I give and bequeath the above mentioned two thirds of my estate to her children as above mentioned and their heirs and assigns forever. Item, I give & bequeath to my nephew Caufield Seward the other one third part of my estate at the death of my mother to him & his heirs forever, provided he should have lawful issue, but should my said nephew Caufield Seward die leaving no such issue, I then after his decease, give the said one third to be divided between all the children of my above mentioned sister Mary Harris, to them and their heirs & assigns forever. Item, my desire is that my mother Sarah Thorp shall reserve such of my carpenters tools for her own use as she may think proper, and the rest to be by my Executors for the best price that can be got. Lastly, I do constitute and appoint my nephew Caufield Seward and my kinsmen Byrd Lundy my whole and sole Executors of this my Last Will and Testament revoking all Wills heretofore by me made.
