SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY, VA - WILLS AND ESTATES - Matthew Smith, 19 Sep 1783 --------------¤¤¤¤¤¤-------------- Wills: Matthew Smith, Southampton Co, VA (1785) I, Matthew Smith of Southampton County do make and ordain this my Last Will and Testament in manner and form as follows, viz: First, I give to my wife Mourning Smith, the all? of all my estate of any kind during her natural life and after her decease to be sold and equally divided among all my brothers/namely/Joseph, Arthur, Benjamin, & Oingus Smith, to them and their heirs, yet nevertheles it is my will and desire that/for the use thereof/my said wife Mourning provide for and allow my father Arthur Smith a sufficient maintenance during his natural life or in case he should be the longest liver that my aforesaid brothers do in like manner provide for and maintain him. Second, I do hereby appoint my loving wife Mourning Smith and my friends Hardy Pope and Lemuel Jones Executors to this my Last Will & Testament. IN WITNESS whereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 19th day of September 1783. This Will was presented in Court by Hardy Pope, one of the Executors therein named, and lodged for proof. And at a Court held for the County of Southampton the 11th day of August 1785 this Will was proved by the oaths of John Pope & Joseph Wright, two of the witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded and on the motion of Mourning Smith, the Executor therein named, who made oath according to law, certificate is granted her for obtaining a Probat thereof in due form giving security whereupon &c.
