SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY, VA - WILLS AND ESTATES - James Summerell, 24 Feb 1800 --------------¤¤¤¤¤¤-------------- IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN, I James Summerell of the County of Southampton being sick and weak in body but of perfect mind and memory, thanks be given unto God, therefore calling unto mind the mortality of my body and the salvation of my immortal soul and knowing it is appointed for all men once to die, do make and ordain this my last will & testament, viz: Principally, and first of all, I recommend my soul into the hands of God who gave it, nothing doubting but I shall receive the same again at the general resurrection by the mighty power of God and for my body I recommend to the earth to be buried in a christian like and decent manner at the discretion of my Executors and as touching such worldly estate wherewith it has pleased God to bless me with in this life, I give devise and dispose of in the manner and form following: Imprimis, as the true intent and meaning of the following respectiong land in the first place - I do direct a line as a division - beginning at a small cedar tree, a line tree standing between two hickorys, a line trees adjoining Lucy Williamson thence a straight course to a spring called the Plug Spring thence a straight course from the said hickorys and spring to Thomas Summerell line of land. Item: The east part from such directed line I give & bequeath unto my son Silas Summerell to him and his heirs forever. Item: From such line westward of land I lend the use thereof to my wife Anna Summerell during her natural life, but at my said wifes death, I give & bequeath such land lent unto my wife to my son Lemuel Butts Summerell, to him and his heirs forever. Item: I give & bequeath unto my loving wife one feather bed & furniture, also give unto my loving wife one cow & calf also the old bay mare, I give unto my loving wife, also I lend the use of my still unto my loving wife (during) her life, at her death I give & bequeath unto my son Lemuel Butts Summerell such still to him and his heirs forever. Item: I give unto my daughter Lucretia Branch and to her heirs forever the sum of ten shillings current money of Virginia. Item: Also I lend unto my loving wife the use of my two negroes Rachal and Peter, (during) her life and at the death of my wife, I give such negroes to be equally divided among my three daughters namely: Dianah, Sally & Eleanor Summerell and to them and to their heirs forever. Item: Also lend the use of my negro boy Willis to (my) loving wife for the term ten years in order to support my son James Summerell jusent? the term at the end of ten years, I give unto my loving son James Summerell said negro boy to him and to his heirs forever. I also do appoint William Boykin and Silas Summerell my whole & sole Executors of this my Last Will & Testament.
