Joseph THARPE  (1720-1762), will dated 12 Dec 1761, proved 13 May 1762  

Whereas I Joseph Tharp of Southampton County being Sick and weak in Body but of 
perfect sence and memory and knowing it is oppointed for all Men once to Die do 
make this my Last Will and Testament first I lend unto my Loving Wife Ann all 
my hole Estate during her widowhood for to Raise my Children and after her 
widowhood for all my Estate to be Equally Devided amoungst my Wife and all my 
Children where unto I set my Hand and Seal this tenth Day of the twelfth month 
one thousand seven hundred and sixty one

Court Order Book 1759-63, pp. 215-16: 

[At a Court held for the County of Southampton the 13th Day of May  1762] 

a writing purporting the last will of Joseph Thorpe was this 
day produced in court, But the witness thereto being remov'd 
out of the Colony  on the motion of An Thorpe the widow and 
Extor named therein who made oath according to law Certifi= 
cate was granted her for obtainging Lt's of Adm'ton with the sd. 
writing annexed whereupon the sd. Anne Thorpe with Simon 
Pope and Thomas Crenshaw entered into and acknowledg 
their Bond in the penalty of one hundred pounds for the due 
and faithfull administration of the decedents estate

Order'd that Nathan Vasser Thomas Crenshaw and 
John Drake and Jesse Drake or any three of them being 
first sworn before a justice of the peace do appraise in 
Current money the Slave if any and personal estate of 
Joseph Thorpe and return the appraisement to this Court
