SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY, VA - WILLS AND ESTATES - William Thomas, 29 Dec 1794 --------------¤¤¤¤¤¤-------------- Will: William Thomas, St.Luke Parish, Southampton Co, VA (1794) IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN, I William Thomas of the Parish of St. Luke & County of Southampton, being of sound & disposing mind & memory, thanks be given to almighty God for the same, do make & constitute this my last will & testament in form & manner following, that is to say: Imprimis: I give and bequeath unto my son Henry the land & plantation whereon I now live to him & his heirs forever, to wit: bounded on the south by a line of mark'd trees newly made beginning at a line in the east side of Fogwhathunta Swamp near Williams's crossing thence by a line of mark'd trees easterly to the cleard ground whereon I now live, thence by the said cleard ground, a direct course to a gum near Hooks Spring thence by a line dividing my plantation called Sarah Castars to a small pine near the head of a small branch thence on easterly course to a cross, a point of woods to the head of another small branch, thence down the run of the said branch to the old patents line thence by the old patents line to the beginning. My will further is that my son Henry pay my son William the sum of ten pounds in his assuring at the age of twenty one years & also ten pounds yearly for two years after, and also that he pay my son John the sum of ten pounds at his arriving at the age of twenty one years, and also the yearly sum of ten pounds for two years after, and that he pay my daughter Lucy seven pounds, ten shillings on her arriving at the age of twenty one years or marriaage and also the like sum of seven pounds, ten shillings the ensuing years at which my said son Henry is to advance out of the estate hereby to him given and further that my said son Henry support & maintain my sister Elizabeth during her life out of her estate by accounting for the profits thereof agreeable to the will of my dec'd father. Item: I give & bequeath to my son William & his heirs forever a tract or tenement of land containing by estimation 350 acres more or less & bounded as follows, to wit: beginning at a tins? on the east side Fogwaghthunta Swamp near Williams'crossing thence along a line of mark'd trees easterly to the clear'd ground whereon I now live thence by the said clear'd ground, a direct line to a gum near Hooks Spring thence by a croping, my plantation called Sarah Castars to a small pine near the head of a small branch, thence down the run of the said branch to the great branch, thence down the run of the said branch to Fogwaghunta Swamp aforesaid, thence down the run of the said swamp to the beginning. Item: I give & bequeath to my son John & his heirs all the residue of my lands known by the names of Betty Edwards's & Herrings adjoining my other lands already given away. Item: I give & bequeath to my daughter Lucy & her heirs forever one negro girl named Fanny also the sum of fifty pounds to be applied toward her education. Item: I give and bequeath to my grand daughter Charlotte Pritlow & her heirs forever one neg. boy named Cato, also the sum of twenty five pounds to be delivered her at the age of twenty one years or marriage but if she dies before she arrives at the age of 21 years or marries, my will is that the said negro boy Cage (that's what it says, not Cato) & twenty five pounds remain in my estate. Item: I give and bequeath to my son George Gurley the sum of three hundred pounds at the day of my death & to carry interest from that time till he arrives at the age of 21 years. As to the remainder of my estate, my will & desire is that when my son William arrives to the age of twenty one years, after payment of my debts and getting a part the legacies hereby given, that the remainder be equally divided between all my children that shall then be living by my Executors hereafter named & that each receive those respective parts for their support and maintenance. Lastly, I do appoint my son Henry & George Gurley said Executors of this my Last Will & Testament ratifying & confirming this & no other to be my Last Will & Testament. Blow, William Newsum & John Gurley, the witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded, and on the motion of the said Executors whom made oaths according to law, Certificate is granted them for obtaining a Probat thereof in due form giving security whereupon &c.
