SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY, VA - WILLS AND ESTATES - John Thorp, 7 Jul 1795 --------------¤¤¤¤¤¤-------------- IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN, I John Thorp of Southampton County, State of Virginia, being weak of body but of sound mind & memory do make & ordain this my last will & testament, as followeth, to wit: I lend to my loving wife Polly Thorp (during her natural life or widowhood) the use of all my land & plantation whereon I now live, also the use of my part of the still left me by my father, also the use of my two negroes, to wit: Mark & Joan, two iron potts, half dozen pewter plates, six earthen plates, two pewter dishes, three pewter basons, one frying pan each to her choice, one iron skillet, two water pails, three wash tubs to her choice, one spinning wheel to her choice, three pair of cotton cards to her choice, three feather beds & furniture, one sorrel mare cal'd "the old mare", one sorrel colt call'd Fagan, two cows & calves, four ewes & lambs, all the hoggs belonging to the sutig? using our "the beaver pond" by Charles Bass'es, 50 barrels of corn, cart & wheals, one loom, and after the death or marriage of said wife, my will & desire is that what I have lent to my wife, except the land, to be sold to the highest bidder & the money arising from the sale be equally divided between all my children hereafter named, to wit: Aaron, Elizabeth Reese, Susannah, Moses, John, Polly & the child my wife is now pregnant with. And after the death or marriage of my wife, my desire is that the land I have lent my wife be rented out (for the benefit of all my sons above named, also the child unborn, if it be a son) till my youngest son arrives to the age of twenty one years. And then, the said land to be sold & the money to be equally divided between all my above named & mentioned sons including the child unborn, if a son. Item: My will & desire is that all the remainder of my estate of what nature or kind soever found, including the land I bought of Charles Bass, and wheresoever found, except my legacy due me by John Reese's will be sold to the best bidder. And the money arising from said sale be applyed to discharge my just debts & the balance, if any, be divided between my before mentioned children equally. Item: my will & desire is that the money which may be due me by the Will of John Reese, dec'd, as my wife's legacy, be applyed by my Executor hereafter named & he is hereby authorized to purchase a negroe man slave to be considered as part of my estate & that my said wife have the sole use of said negro he bought during her life or widowhood & after her death or marriage, to be sold & the money to be equally divided between all my above mentioned children. Lastly, I constitute & appoint my friends John Harris Sr (could be Jr), Randolph Reese, Riven Reese & Roger Reese my whole & sole Executors of this my Last Will & Testament revoking all other Will or Wills by me heretofore made. The Executors not qualifying, time was given him to qualify at the next court. Whereupon At a Court held for the County of Southampton the 8th day of October 1795 On the motion of Randolph Reese, one of the Executors of the Will who made oath according to law, Certificate is granted him to obtain a Probat thereof in due form giving security whereupon &c.
