Southampton County Virginia USGenWeb Archives Wills and Estates Will Book 4 (partial) Southampton Co., VA, Will Book 4, 1783-1797 The Library of Virginia, Richmond, VA LVA Southampton Microfilm Reel 17 [p] 109 [note in margin] Abraham JOHNSON's Will In the name of God Amen I Abraham JOHNSON of Southampton county and Parish of St. Luke being sick and weak in body, but in perfect mind and memory thanks be to God for it calling to mind the mortality of my body & knowing it appointed men to die do make & ordain this my last will & testament: principally & first of all I recommend my soul into the hands of almighty God and my body to the ground to be buried in a christian like manner and as touching such worldly Estate which it hath pleased almighty God to bless me with in this life I give & devise in the following manner & form: I leave unto my loving wife Sarah JOHNSON the plantation whereon I now dwell with all the land thereunto belonging: also one Negro woman named Honour: one feather bed & furniture: to her during of her natural life and after her decease: I give & devise my said Estate as hereafter directed: I give & bequeath to my Son Harriss JOHNSON one negro man named Malachi: as also one negro woman named Belinda & her increase with paying the Sum of Fifty pounds Specie to my Son Jacob JOHNSON at the end of five years after my decease and in so doing I give them to him and his heirs for: ever: [page break] I give and bequeath to my Son Josiah JOHNSON one negro boy named Tom and one negro woman named Judah and her increase with paying the Sum of Forty pounds specie to my Son Micajah JOHNSON at the end of five years after my decease and after the decease of me and my wife I give to my son Josiah JOHNSON the plantation whereon I now dwell with all the land belonging thereto to him and his heirs for ever: And after the decease of loving wife Sarah JOHNSON I leave all the remainder of Estate to be sold and equally divided amongst all my children after paying my just debts if there be any: I do appoint my two Sons Harriss JOHNSON and Josiah JOHNSON my whole & sole Executors to this my last will- ratifying this and no other to be my last will and testament. Whereupon &c. ----------------- Samuel ATKINSON's Will In the name of God Amen the twelfth day of March 1782 I Samuel Atkinson being in perfect health & sound mind & memory & knowing it is appointed for all men once do die do make & ordain this to be my last will & testament in manner & form following. First I give my soul to the Almighty that gave it me & my body I leave to be buried at the descretion of my Executor hereafter named & touching (?) what worldy goods I have I dispose of as follows: Item: I give and bequeath unto my son Samuel Atkinson & his heirs forever the plantation whereon he now lives & ninety acres thereunto belonging. Item: I give and bequeath unto my son Isham Atkinson and his heirs forever the plantation whereon I now live and one hundred acres land thereunto adjoining also one negro named Hark. Item: I give and bequeath unto my son Jesse Atkinson & his heirs forever ninety-five acres of land be the same more of less adjoining the lands of Mr. Wm. Whitehead. Item: I give and bequeath unto Martha Newsom one cow & calf to her & her heirs forever. Item: I give and bequeath unto my wife one feather bed & furniture to her & her heirs forever. Item: I give unto my son in law Jesse Johnson five shillings current money. Item: I give unto my daughter Mary Johnson five shillings current money my will & desire is that all the remainder part of my estate of what kind so ever be equally divided between my wife Martha & my sons Isham & Jesse & my daughter Phebe Atkinson & their heirs forever. East to the Reedy Branch to Barrows line All my lands on the North side of said line I lend to my loving wife Polly during her natural life or widowhood likewise all my stock of horses , cattle, Hogs, Sheep, household & kitchen furniture plantation utensills ve. likewise a Neg Wench Sarah for the term of ten years at the expiration of which time it is my desire she be set free. I likewise lend her the use of a Negro boy Aaron & a Negro girl Calah untill such time as my daughters Polly Claud Francis & my daughter Dolly Claud Francis Mary at which time I give to my daughter Polly the Negro boy Aaron & I give to my daughter Dolly the Neg. girl Calah to them and their heirs forever. What I have lent to my wife Polly is in Lien of her dower for the purpose of raising & schooling my children at the death or Intermarrying of my wife Polly I give my said Land to my daughter Lucy Claud to her and her heirs forever. At the same time I desire that my stock of horses Cattle hogs sheep household & kitchen furniture vc. be sold & the money arising therefrom to be equally divided between my daughters Polly, Dolly and Fanny Claud Francis--- Item I give to my daughter Fanny Claud Francis all my lands on the East side of the line above mentioned to her and her heirs forever. This will was Presented in court by [blank]: Proved by the oaths of Matt.w CRUMPLER & John WRIGHT two of the witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded- Sam KELLO Cl ---------------- [p] 778 [note in margin] James TURNER Will In the Name of God Amen I James TURNER of the County of Southampton & State of Virginia being week in body but of a Sound and disposing mind & memory thanks be to God for the Same and Calling to mind the uncertainty of this transitory life do make this my last Will and Testament in Manner following: Imprimis It is My Will and desire that my body be decently buried at the discretion of my Executors and my just debts Paid- Item I Give and bequeath to my son Edmund TURNER one half of my lands & one half of my mill to him and his heirs forever but if he Sould die before he arrives to the age of twenty one years, or without Lawfull Issue then I give the Said Land and the half of the Mill to my Son Benjamin TURNER to him and to his heirs forever- Item I Give and Bequeath to my Son Benjamin TURNER the other half of my Land & Mill to him and his heirs forever but if he Should die before he arrives to the age of twenty one Years, or without Lawfull Issue then I Give the Said land & half the Mill to my son Edmund TURNER, to him & his heirs forever.- Item I Give and Bequeath to my daughter Nancy TURNER one Negro Girl nam'd China to her & her heirs forever Item I Give & Bequeath the Remainder of my Negroes & all their future increase to my three children namely Edmund TURNER Benjamin TURNER & Nancy TURNER to be equally divided between them when my Son Edmund TURNER arrives to the age of twenty one years to them and their heirs forever- My will and desire is that the remainder of my estate herein ["-tofore" struck out] mentioned of what Kind or nature soever or wheresoever found to be Sold & the money arising from Such Sale to be equally divided between my three children above mentioned-. HARRISS & Nancy [sic] HARRISS to them & their heirs forever but if Either of them die before She arrives To the Age of Twenty One Years Or Marry:s then the survivor of them To heir [should read 'her'] the whole of the s.d Sixth part of my estate above Mentioned my will and desire is That my Ex'ors hereafter nam'd take the charge and care of the Same for the Benefit and use of the Said Penny Carr HARRISS and Jinny HARRISS Untill they arrive to the age of Eighteen Years or Marry's- Item My will and Desire is that after the Death of my wife that all the Remainder of my estate of what nature or Kind soever be Equally Devided Between my five Children hereafter Nam'd (To Wit) Stirling HARRISS John HARRISS Peyton HARRISS James HARRIS and Charlot TURNER to them and their heirs forever- Item And Lastly I Constitute and appoint my Two sons to witt Peyton HARRISS and James HARRISS my whole Ex'ors of this my Last will and Testament Revoking all other will or wills by me heretofore made.
