SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY, VA - WILLS AND ESTATES - Joshua Wood, 26 Dec 1782 --------------¤¤¤¤¤¤-------------- Wills: Joshua Wood, Nottoway Parish, Southampton Co, VA IN THE NAME OF GOD amen, I Joshua Wood of the Parish of Nottoway and County of Southampton being weak in body but of perfect mind & memory do make and ordain this my Last Will & Testament in manner & form following: First, I lend unto my wife Sarah Wood the use of the plantation wherein I now live with the lands adjoining containing one hundred & fifty acres, also fifty five acres adjoining purchased of Richardson Riggin, also the land & plantation of Handin's place containing one hundred & thirty eight acres, also four negroes namely: Sam, Rose, Richard & Siah, during her natural life or widowhood. Secondly, I give & bequeath unto my son Benjamin Wood ten thousand weight of tobacco due me by bond from John Butts's estate, with the contents due thereon, also I give my said son one negro boy named Charles, one feather bed & furniture & ten pounds current money of Virginia to him & his heirs forever. Thirdly, I give and bequeath unto my son Joel Wood the land and plantation I purchased of Isham Davis lying in the Assiminoa Swamp in Southampton County containing three hundred and eighty five acres more or less. I also give my said son Joel one feather bed & furniture, one horse of ten pounds value, two cows & calves & two sows & pigs or the value thereof to him and to his heirs forever. Fourthly, I give and bequeath unto my son Edmund Wood after the death or intermarriage of my wife, all the lands and plantation lent her as above to him & his heirs forever. I also give my said son Edmund one feather bed & furniture, one horse of ten pounds value, two cows & calves & two sows & pigs to him & his heirs forever. Fifthly, It is my will and desire that if either of my sons should die before they have lawfull issue or before they arrive at the age of twenty one years that then the legacies given such deceased son, be equally divided between my surviving sons or their heirs. Sixthly, I give unto my daughter Rebecca Wood, one negro girl named Hannah, one feather bed & furniture & thirty pounds current money of Virginia to her and her heirs forever. Seventhly, I give unto my daughter Mary Wood, one negro boy named Roger, one feather bed and furniture & thirty pounds current money of Virginia, to her and her heirs forever. Eightly, I give unto my daughter Anna Wood one negro boy named Sam, one feather bed and furniture, & thirty pounds current money of Virginia to her & her heirs forever. Ninthly, It is my will and desire that if either of my daughters should die before they marry or before they arrive at the age of twenty one years, that then the legacies of each deceased daughter be equally divided between my surviving daughters or their heirs and in case either of the negroes given my said daughters should die before the period of their marriage or coming to the age of twenty one & before a settlement and division of my estate then I desire that fifty pounds current money be given to such daughter. I lend all the remainder of my estate after my debts and legacies are paid to my wife during her natural life or widowhood & after her death or intermarriage my will & desire is that the negroes given her, and all the remainder of my estate of ever kind not herein given away be sold to the highest bidder & equally divided amongst my said children herein named or their heirs. And lastly I do hereby constitute & appoint my wife Sarah Wood & my son Benjamin Wood Executrix & Executor of this my Last Will & Testament revoking all former Wills by me made, & I desire that no appraisement be made of my estate.
