SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY, VA - WILLS AND ESTATES - Samuel Westbrook, 13 Nov 1784 --------------¤¤¤¤¤¤-------------- Wills: Samuel Westbrook, Southampton Co, VA (1785) IN THE NAME OF GOD amen, I Samuel Westbrook of the County of Southampton calling to mind the uncertainty of human life do make and appoint this to be my Last Will & Testament and first I recommend my soul to almighty God who gave it and my body to be buried in a christian like manner at the discretion of my Executors hereafter mentioned and as to what worldly goods it has pleased almighty God to bestow on me I dispose of them in manner following: Item: I give to my son Burwell Westbrook all my land on the south side of the rin? house branch and likewise on the north side of the said branch and below a run marked "line" begining at a gum in the said branch and running to a pine standing in a small branch in Jacob Westbrook's line, and one feather bed and furniture, likewise my negro boy Ben, likewise my sorrell filley which came of my old sorrell mare, likewise two cows and two breeding sows and my case of bottles and to hold the same in fee simple right all but my wife Mary Westbrook is to have her life on the land. Item: I give to my son John Westbrooke my negro girl Jane which negro he has now in possession to him and his heirs forever. Item: I give to my daughter Polly Newsom one half of my land lying in the north side of the rin? house branch except that given to Burwell hers to be joining to that rin? mark'd line likewise one feather bed & furniture which bed she has now in possession, likewise my negro girl Venus one trunk, which trunk she has now in possession the above to her and her heirs forever. Item: I give to my grand children the orphans of my son Samuel Westbrook, deceased, namely, Turner Westbrook, David Westbrook, Joel Westbrook, Samuel Westbrook and Phebe Westbrook ten pounds cash each to be raised out of my estate, I likewise give to my grand son David Westbrook all my land lying on the north side of the rin? house branch rights that above given to him and his heirs forever. Item: I give to my loving wife Mary Westbrook the use of my plantation whereon I now live during the time of her natural life, likewise two negroes, her choice of all I hold, except them above given away, one feather fed & furniture, one horse and saddle & bridle at not less value than fifteen pounds, two cows & calves, T? sows & pigs. Item: I give to my wife my still and my copper kettle, one pot & hooks, one dutch oven, one frying pan, three pewter dishes, six pewter plates, six pewter spoons, one loom, one woollen wheel & cards, axes, hoes &c to make a crop and to hold the above during the term of her natural life and at her death to be sold and divided in six equal parts: one part I give to be equally divided between the orphans of my son Samuel Westbrook and one part to be divided between the children of my daughter Lucy Andrews deceased and one part to the children of my daughter Mary Wommack deceased and one part to my son John Westbrook and one part to my son Burwell Westbrook and one part to my daughter Patty Newsom. Item: My will and desire is that all the remainder part of my estate be it in what kind soever real or personal be sold and all my just debts paid and the remainder to be divided in six equal parts and one part I give to my son John Westbrook, and one part to my son Burwell Westbrook and one part to my daughter Patty Newsom, and one part to the orphans of my son Samuel Westbrook and one part to the orphans of my daughter Lucy Andrews deceased and one part to the orphans of my daughter Mary Wommack deceased. I do appoint my sons John Westbrook and my son Burwell Westbrook Executors of this my Last Will and Testament on virtue wehereof I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this thirteenth day of November 1784.
