SOUTHAMPTON COUNTY, VA - WILLS AND ESTATES - Joshua Westbrook, 22 Dec 1794 --------------¤¤¤¤¤¤-------------- IN THE NAME OF GOD AMEN, I Joshua Westbrook of the County of Southampton, being sick & weak in body but of perfect mind and memory, do make & appoint this to be my last will and testament. And first, I recommend my soul to almighty God who gave it and my body to be buried in a christian manner at the discretion of my Executors hereafter mentioned and as to what worldy goods it hath pleas'd almighty God to bestow on me in this life, I give & dispose of them in manner & form following: Item: I lend to my son Jarrat Westbrook the use of my negro boy Buck & likewise my negro girl Salah & her increase. Also, at the death of Elizabeth Clifton, my negro fellow likewise during her life, and at her death I give them to his heirs forever. Item: I give to my son Janaatt Westbrook one sorrel mare, one feather bed & furniture, one sow and nine sheats and my gun to him and his heirs forever. Item: I lend to my son Zacariah Westbrook the use of my negro boy Jack likewise my my girl Poll and her increase during his life and at his decease to his heirs forever. (both my my's are in the document) Item: I give to my son Zacariah Westbrook the sum of ten pounds cash to be raised out of my estate & one feather bed & furniture to him and his heirs forever. Item: I lend to my daughter Betsy Dolly Westbrook the use of one negro woman Dinah & her increase hereafter, likewise my negro girl Milly & her increase during the term of his life and at her decease to heirs, lawfully begotten of her body, forever. Item: I give to my daughter Betsy Dolly Westbrook one feather bed and furniture, call'd my bed) likewise one sorrell horse called Jack and also one trunk to her & her heirs forever. And if either of the before said parties dies without heirs lawfully begotten of their body, my desire is the negros of the deceas'd be not sold but equally divided between the surviving ones as the case might me (be?). Item: My will and desire is that all the remainder part of my estate be sold to wit? in what kind soever, all my just debts paid and the remainder together with all just debts due me be equally divided between Jarrat Westbrook, Zacariah Westbrook and Betsy Dolly Westbrook. I do appoint Howill Scarbrough & Robert Murrell/preacher, Executors of this my Last Will & Testament. IN WITNESS whereof I have hereunto set my hand & seal this 22nd day of December 1794.
