The submitter has given permissionto the USGenWeb Archives to store the file permanently for free access. http://www.usgwarchives.net *********************************************************************** Source: Library of Virginia Digital Collection Chew, John Pen. 75 1786-1790 Lieutenant--2nd Regiment Virginia Militia Spotsylvania County Spotsylvania County March 28 1786: I do certify that the bearer John Chew, jr. was born on the 5th day of August 1753, living now in the 33rd year of his age, as recorded by his register recorded in the Family Bible belonging to his ancestors--and that the said John Chew Lt. now is, and has been from the time of his birth an Inhabitant of the County aforesaid. Spotsylvania County-March 28 1786: I do hereby certify that the bearer hereof, John Chew, jr. served as a Lieutenant in the my Regiment Militia, ordered from his state for the relief of South Carolina, and in the action near Cambden (near South Carolina) which happened the 1 day of August. The said Chew was wounded in the left arm, which was the cause of its being amputated. Certified the above date mentioned. Signed: Col. Stubblefield, Col. 2nd Reg. V. M. I do with the advice of Council hereby certify that John Chew, about 33 years of age, late a Lieutenant in the 2nd Virginia Regiment ordered to the Relief of South Carolina appears to have been disabled in such a manner while in the service of the United States as to entitle him to the sum of forty-eight pounds yearly, which allowance is accordingly made him , to commence from the 1st day of January 1786.
