G or Yates Defeat. Given under my hand at Richmond Nov. 27 1883. George Stubblefield, Col. 2nd VA Regt. of Militia. It is ordered to be certifyed that Ambrose Lewis a soldier who was badly wounded in Gen'l Yates defeat near Camden in SC appears to the Court to be a proper object to receive a pension and that indigency of circumstance render the same necessary. It is further certifyed that the said Ambrose Lewis served in the 2nd Regt. of Militia ordered from this state for the relief of SC. Teste: Jno. Chewy. ***transcriber is not sure whether it is Gates or Yates. Examintion of the within-mentioned person, find a ball has passed through the right thigh and done considerable injury to the free motion of the muscle, ____ by adhesion to the bone. Two stabs of the bayonet appear to have rassed through the left arm and he complains much of and alledges that the bayonet at one time passed from the left to the right side and formed a soar which appear thorow. This may have been a fact or the deviation on the ____ ____ miss the heart and if the bayonet did pass through I have no doubt but all his complaints, such as difficutly of breathing, ____ and evident pain or any brisk _____, as real. Therefore, he is greatly disabled from obtaining a livelihood obtaining a support by hard labour. Wm. Foushes, surgeon, May 18, 1787. I do with the advice of the Council hereby certify that Ambrose Lewis, aged about 26 years, late a private in the VA Militia, commanded by Col. George Stubblefield, and whose pay was at the rate of 24 pounds per annum was disabled in the service of the United States by several wounds by a bayonet through his arm and body; and that he is allowed the sum of 8 pounds yearly, commencing from the first of Jan. 1786.
