Spotsylvania Co., VA Miscellaneous Wills Will of James Lewis, 1835 I James Lewis of Spotsylvania Cty & State of Virginia do hereby make my last will as Follows: Imprimis I desire all my Just debts & Funeral expenses be paid. Item~ It is my will that my executrix Sell my Interest in the Mill & land attached to it left me by my father, to the best advantage she can on a Credit of twelve months~ Item~ I give to my beloved wife Frances Lewis the use profit & benefit of my whole estate both real & personal for her Support & the support of my two sons Benjamin T and James W Lewis until my youngest son arrives to the age of twenty one years at which time I will my estate to be divided as follows, I loan to my wife the land I now live on and one third part on the balance of my estate during her life and at her death I will the same to be divided between my two sons, but if either of them should die before the division I will his part to be divided between my wife & my other Son and if both of my sons should die before they arrive to the age of twenty one I give to my beloved wife to her & her heirs forever all the slaves & their increase given her by her father at her marriage: I also loan her all the balance of my estate for & during her natural life and at her death I give the same to be divided between my Sisters & Brothers or their lawful heirs to them & their heirs forever ~ Lastly I appoint my beloved wife executrix to this my last will and guardian for my two sons, and also request the Court Should not request of her Security- In witness whereof I have let my hand & Seal this; 22nd day of July 1835. Acknowledged in the presence of Henry Beasley James Lewis Seal Moatimore Waller Wm H Amoruos At a Court held for Spotsylvania County October the 5th 1835. The Last will and Testament of James Lewis deceased was proved by the oaths of Henry Beasley and Mortimore Waller two of the witnesses thereto and ordered to be recorded ~. And on the notion of Frances J Lewis the executrix therein named who made oath thereto and entered into and acknowledged a bond in the penalty of $11000 Conditioned as the law directs. Certificate is granted her for obtaining a probate of said will in due form~ Teste Therit Towles c.c. Will of Trueman Lewis Last Will and Testament of Tureman Lewis esqr. of the County of Spotsylvania and State of Virginia; Be it known to all whom it may Concern that I Tureman Lewis of Spotsylvania County and State of Virginia, being weak in body but of sound and disposing mind do this 22nd day of November this year of our Lord 1833 bequeath my property as follows. First I lend to my beloved wife during her natural life these servants viz. Charles, David, Jack, Stapleton, Granville and Lewis also two negro women of the same name Celras, and Cook Celras children Alfred and Agga, Second I lend to my beloved wife during her natural life the plantation on which I now reside, together with all the land I own, household and Kitchen furniture stock of every description farming Utensils and every thing belonging to me on the plantation or other land as well as every thing pertaining to the said plantation and other land with the exception of one third of my mill. Third I will and bequeath to my daughter Mary Taylor one third of the mill to aid in the support of her children. Fourth I will and bequeath to my daughter Sally Robbins of Tennessee a negro girl named Lisa. Fifth In consideration of the trouble affectionate and unweaned attention of my sons James Lewis and William T. Lewis during my illness, I will and bequeath to them after the death of their mother the two thirds of my mill before mentioned and twenty acres of land adjoining the mill, bounded nearby as follows: beginning at the ponds running up to a pear trees, with a grape bush on a white oak, thence Southerly to include the quantity to the run, called the East North East, thence up the said run to the mill. Sixth, It is my will and desire that my beloved wife should be at liberty at any time to sell any of the stock or other produce of the plantation or other land or any thing pertaining to them which she may deem necessary. It is my particular request and desire that my Stallion, Saltram, should be sold and the proceeds after sale applied to make the portion of my daughter Huldah Pendleton equal to that of my other children. Seventh, I will and bequeath to my unfortunate grandson John Taylor son of my daughter Mary Taylor one hundred dollars to be paid by my executors when wanting. Eighth, I will and bequeath my watch to my son William T. Lewis. Ninth, I hereby will and direct that all the property herein named as lent to my beloved wife during her natural life shall after her death be sold and the proceeds equally divided among my children. Lastly I constitute and appoint my two sons James Lewis and William T. Lewis the executors of this my last will and testament, and having full confidence in them, I do hereby direct that no security should be required of them for the performance of their duty, In Witness whereof I have this day placed my hand and Seal. And on the motion of William T Lewis one of the executors therein named who made oath thereto and entered into and acknowledged a bond in the penalty of $7000 Conditioned as the law directs certification is granted him for obtaining a probate of said will in due form.
