A18 Carrollton - Clem C. Batten Sr., 71, died in Louise Obici Memorial Hospital, Suffolk. A native of Isle of Wight County, he was the husband of the late Mrs. Agnes Batten and a son of Oscar and Mrs. Betty Batten. He was retired from the State Highway Department. He was a member of Campbell's Chapel AME Church. SURVIVING are two daughters, Mrs. Delores Wooten and Mrs. Mabel Taliaferro of Carrollton; nine sons: Mertheral Batten of Persburg, Army Sgt. Illinois Batten of Ft. Bragg NC., James Batten and Eugene Batten of Newport News, Clem Batten Jr., and Dalton Batten of Smithfield, and Benjamin Batten, Asa Batten, and Palfus Batten of Carrollton; four sisters, Mrs. Lucy Batten and Mrs. Cornelia Godwin of Carrollton and Mrs. Emma Bragg and Mrs. Mary King of Baltimore; four brothers, George Batten, Lee Batten, and Eley Batten of Baltimore and Allen Batten of Carrollton; 46 grandchildren; and 10 great grandchildren. A funeral service was held in Campbell's Chapel AME Church by the Rev. J.C. Mason. Burial was in the church cemetery with Pretlow & Chapman Funeral Home, Smithfield, in charge.
