He was a native of Suffolk and a Navy veteran of World War II. He was employed as a brakeman for Norfolk and Western Railway for the past 23 years, and a member of Main Street United Methodist Church and its James L. McLemore Sunday school class. Survivors include two sons, John Earl Benton and Jimmie Lee Benton, both of Suffolk; three sisters, Mrs. Susie B. Riddick and Mrs. Lillian B. Byrd, both of Corapeake, N.C., and Mrs. Addie B. Daughtrey of Suffolk; four grandchildren and two step-grandchildren. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. today in I.O. Hill and Co. Funeral Home by Dr. R.E. Brittle. Burial will be in the Benton family cemetery at Corapeake. The family will receive friends at the home of Mrs. Frances M. Benton, 753 Carolina Road.
