HENLEY WESCOTT "MONK" CHURN SR.

H. W. CHURN SR., FORMER CHIEF OF POLICE, DIES

   Suffolk - Henley Wescott "Monk" Churn Sr., 86, former chief of police of 
Suffolk, died Sunday in a local hospital.

   A native of Norfolk, Mr. Churn joined the Suffolk police department in 
1914.  He was chief of police from 1923 until 1940 when he was named special 
investigator for Suffolk, a post he held until his retirement in 1958.

   A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at Harrell’s Funeral Home 
in Suffolk, with burial in Cedar Hill Cemetery.

*While a marker remains in Cedar Hill Cemetery - where he wished to be buried, 
   beside his first wife, Hortense (PIERCE) CHURN (1896-1929) - 
   his remains were moved in the early 1980's by his second wife, 
   Margie (LOWE) CHURN, to her family plot, in Pineview Cemetery, 
   S. Rocky Mount, Edgecombe Co., NC.

His mother, Estelle "Essie" May (NOTTINGHAM; Mrs. Severn B.) CHURN, is buried 
   unmarked in Elmwood Cemetery, Norfolk.

He was shot in the arm during an arrest, 13 Jul 1920.  The article 
   ("Richmond Times-Dispatch," July 14, 1920. p. 5), which actually gives
