All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ DANIEL NEWTON FARNELL FORMER CITY COUNCILMAN, D.N.FARNELL, DIES AT 73 Daniel Newton Farnell, Jr., 73, of 310 Country Club Drive, a former Greensboro City County member and attorney for the Greensboro-High Point Airport Authority for many years, died Monday afternoon at the desk in his office in the Jefferson Building. The funeral will be held in the chapel of the First Presbyterian Church, of which he was a former deacon, by the pastor, the Rev. Joseph B. Mullin, at 2 p.m. Wednesday and burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The body is at Forbes and Dick Funeral Home. A native of Suffolk, Va., Farnell received undergraduate and law degrees from Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va. He also did graduate work at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. Farnell was licensed to practice in North Carolina in 1924 and moved to Greensboro, where he was an assistant solicitor in Guilford Superior Court a few years. He married the former Lula Moore Suttle of Shelby in 1929. He would have been 74 years old Oct. 24. He was a member of the American Bar Association, the State Bar Association and Greensboro Bar Association of which he was a past president. He also had held the presidencies of the Greensboro Kiwanis Club, the Thursday Night Whist Club and the N.C. Railroad Co. He was a member of the Roundtable Club and the Greensboro County Club. For several years he represented the Bessemer Sanitary District and was instrumental in the negotiations for merging that area into the City of Greensboro in 1957. He was a member of the city council for one term, 1957-59. Much of the early expansion of the Regional Airport was affected during his tenure as attorney for the airport authority. Surviving besides his widow are his daughter, Mrs. Gloria Farnell Cowan; four grandchildren; sister, Mrs. Vallie Farnell of Suffolk, Va.
