He was a native and life-long resident of Isle of Wight County, residing in Windsor. He was a retired farmer and was formerly a buyer for Columbia Peanut Co. in Suffolk. For 25 years he was "farmer-salesman" with Smith-Douglas Fertilizer Company. He was a member of Antioch Congregational Christian Church, a member of the Board of Trustees and had served several times as a deacon. He was the last surviving charter member of the Windsor Ruritan Club. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Gladys Pierce Godwin; two daughters, Mrs. Lavenia G. Munford of Basking Ridge, N.J., and Mrs. Shirley Crocker of Windsor; a sister, Mrs. Louise G. Strothman of Newport News; and a brother, Mr. Curtis Godwin of Suffolk and four grandchildren. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 17, in the chapel of Sidney F. Harrell Funeral Home with the Rev. Victor Hunter officiating. Interment will be in Holly Lawn Cemetery, Suffolk. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday evening from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The family requests that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to the Windsor Volunteer Rescue Squad or the building fund of Antioch Congregational Christian Church. ****************************************************************************** JOHN HOBDY GODWIN WINDSOR - John Hobday [sic; Hobdy] Godwin, 82, of Virginia Route 3, a retired farmer, died Nov. 14 in his home. Mr. Godwin, a lifelong resident of Isle of Wight County, was a former buyer for Columbia Peanut Co. in Suffolk, and was a farmer-salesman with Smith-Douglas Fertilizer Co. for 25 years.
