SUFFOLK - A funeral service for Cephus Luke Gardner Sr., 79, was held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in South Quay Baptist Church by the Revs. Clyde Alderman and Donald Trump. Burial was in Holly Lawn Cemetery, Suffolk, with Wright Funeral Home, Franklin, in charge. Gardner died Monday in a hospital. A lifelong resident of Nansemond County, he had retired from a job at St. Regis Paper Co. in Franklin. He was a deacon of South Quay Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Mary Joyner Gardner; six daughters, Rachel G. Harrell of Suffolk, Mary G. Hawes of Alfred, N.Y., Ida G. Odom of Brookwood, Ala., Amy G. Tucker of Alexandria, Bernice G. Dilday of Ahoskie, N.C.; a son, Luke Gardner Jr. of Suffolk; 22 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
