CARLYLE HOLLAND, JR., 74; OIL EXECUTIVE, FORMER COUNCILMAN Suffolk - Carlyle Peerman Holland, Jr., chairman of the board of Southern Oil Co., Inc. and a former Suffolk councilman, died Jan. 16, 1989, in a hospital. He was 74 and lived in the 800 block of E. Riverview Drive. A native of Suffolk, Mr. Holland graduated from Suffolk High School and attended the University of Richmond and the University of Virginia. During World War II, he worked as a salesman for Virginian-Carolina Fertilizer Co., until 1947, when he teamed with the late James E. Parker to buy the existing Southern Oil Co. Mr. Holland served as president of Southern Oil from 1950 to 1983, and was board chairman at the time of his death. "He loved the oil business," said his son, David L. Holland, Southern Oil president. "Hopefully, he left a good mark in the community for which he will be remembered." The senior Holland embarked on a political career during the 1960s, serving on the City Council for eight years, including part of that time as vice mayor. He also had served on the board of director and as past president of the Virginia Oil Men’s Association and the Virginia Petroleum Jobbers Association. He was past president of Southern Fuel Distributors Inc. of Portsmouth. A civic leader, he was a former chairman for the March of Dimes Campaign, and a former member of the Suffolk Planning Commission and Suffolk Lions Club. He was a member of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks and Princess Anne Country Club in Virginia Beach. An active churchman, Mr. Holland was a charter member of West End Baptist Church, where he also had served as chairman of the deacon board and memorial fund, a trustee, and Sunday school superintendant. Survivors include his wife, Helen Bogart Holland; a daughter, Greta A. Holland of Playa Del Rey, Calif.; two other sons, C. Peermen Holland, III and W. Bogart Holland both of Virginia Beach; and seven grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in West End Baptist Church by the Revs. T. Floyd Irby Jr., and Donald J. Dunlap. Burial will be in Holly Lawn Cemetery. Hill Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Friends may join the family from 7 to 9 p.m. today in 807 E. Riverview Drive. Memorial donations may be made to the Nansemond-Suffolk Rescue Squad or to the American Heart Association.
