All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ Leah Jaffe VIRGINIA BEACH - Leah Cohen Jaffe, 82, of the 4600 block of Atlantic Avenue, died Sept. 28, 1990, in Virginia Beach General Hospital. A native of Baltimore, Md., she was a former resident of Suffolk. She was the widow of H.I. Jaffe. In the 1930s and 1940s, she was the co-owner and co-operator with her husband of H.I. Jaffe Furniture Co., Suffolk. She also co-operated the H.I. Jaffe Town and Country Clothing Stores, Suffolk, and surrounding area. In the 1950s and 1960s, she was the co-owner and co-operator of Jaffe's in Virginia Beach. She was the first crowned Miss Virginia in 1927. She and her husband founded the Suffolk Community Hospital, which was the first hospital for Blacks in Suffolk. She was a member of Temple Emanuel of Virginia Beach, the Hadassah, the B'NAI B'RITH Women, the Suffolk and Virginia Beach Women's clubs. Survivors include a daughter, Rita Sue Jaffe Gold of Dallas, Texas; a son, Burton H. Jaffe of Arlington; and six grandchildren. Graveside services will be conducted Monday at 2 p.m. in Holly Lawn Cemetery, Suffolk, by Rabbi Lawrence Forman. The family will be at the residence. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice. Hill Funeral Home, Suffolk, is in charge of arrangements.
