A native of Nansemond County, he was a member of Whaleyville United Methodist Church. He was retired from the Nansemond County Sheriff’s Department after 30 years. Survivors include his wife, Mary Sue Jones; four sons, James H. Jones of Hampton, William R. Jones of Portsmouth, Sherwood J. Jones of Chesapeake, and Douglas R. Jones of Danville; three sisters, Nettie Mae Spenador of Chicago, Evelyn Burton of Gloucester, and Ruth Collins of Newport News; a brother, Randolph Jones of Virginia Beach; 10 grandchildren; and eight great- grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in R.W. Baker and Co. Funeral Home by the Rev. Mark C. Whipple. Burial will be in Cypress Chapel Christian Church Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Nansemond-Suffolk Rescue Squad.
