Born in Nansemond [sic; Isle of Wight*] County, he was a former Suffolk resident and a retired, self-employed merchant. He was also a former member of Elephant’s Fork Ruritan Club. Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Gladys Piland Johnson of Franklin; four daughters, Mrs. Linda J. Murray of Elsmere, Ky., Joanne J. Langlois of Mechanicsville, Hilda J. Lee of Minneapolis, and Karen J. Mattera of Mineral; two sons David D. Johnson Jr. of Richmond, and Richard W. Johnson of Mineral; two sisters, Dorothy Ann Davis of Franklin, and Elizabeth Shumate of Wytheville; two brothers, Herbert C. Johnson Jr. of Suffolk, and Alan C. Johnson of San Antonio, Tx.; and five grandchildren. The funeral was conducted Wednesday at Sidney F. Harrell Funeral Home by the Rev. Donald Pernell. Burial was in Holly Lawn Cemetery.
