He was a native and lifelong resident of Suffolk. He was the former owner and operator of E.A. Johnson Painting Co. for over 40 years. He was a member of First Baptist Church. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the American Legion and Disabled American Veterans' Association. He also belonged to the Masonic Lodge No. 340 of Suffolk. Survivors include his wife, Mattie Arthur Johnson; two daughters, Sharon J. Hawkins of Chesapeake and Marsha J. Eley of Suffolk; two sisters, Katherine Holland of Holland Station and Juanita Byrd of Windsor; and four grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted Monday at 11 a.m. in the Sidney F. Harrell Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Charles W. Thompson. Burial will be in Holly Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will take place today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the funeral home, and other times at the residence. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, Suffolk Unit, P.O. Box 1413, Suffolk, Va. 23434, or the Special Care Unit of Obici Hospital, P.O. Box 1100, Suffolk, Va. 23434.
