A native of Southampton County, he was the widower of Virgie Beaton Mumford. He was a retired woodworker for Norfolk Naval Shipyard and was a World War I National Guard veteran. He was a life member of Franklin American Legion Post 73 and Portsmouth Disabled American Veterans Post 22 and a former member of Sedley Encampment Woodmen of the World. Survivors include a son, M. Beamon Mumford of Carrsville; a daughter, Mary A. Carr of Moore, S.C.; a brother, Carr Mumford [sic; Munford] of Isle of Wight; three sisters, Sallie Mumford and Carrie M. Stephenson, both of Burdette, and Ruby Beamon of Suffolk; nine grandchildren; and 14 great- grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in Purviance Funeral Chapel, Wakefield, by the Rev. J. Waverly Horne. Burial will be in Rosemont Cemetery, Sedley. The family will be at Purviance Funeral Home from 7 to 8 p.m. today.
