Poplin. Burial was in Holly Lawn Cemetery, Sidney F. Harrell Funeral Home was in charge. Panton died Wednesday in a hospital. A native of Southampton County, he was the husband of the late Mary Lee Futch. A World War I Army veteran, he had retired as captain from the Suffolk Fire Department after 36 years. He was a member of First Baptist Church, North Street. He was commander of the World War I Barracks No. 1045 and was an honorary member of the Nansemond River Duck Club and life member of the Suffolk Volunteer Fire Company. Survivors include two sons, Richard T. Panton of Charlotte, N.C., and James F. Panton of Suffolk; a stepdaughter, Gladys F. Canney of Imperial Beach, Calif.; a stepson, Richard R. Futch of Shanandoah; two sisters, Lillian T. Bunch of Suffolk and Callie P. Knight of Tampa, Fla.; and nine grandchildren.
