He was a native of Suffolk and the husband of Mrs. Mary Adams Woodward and the son of the late Richard L. Woodward and Sue Eggleston Woodward. He was a captain in the Marine Corps in World War II and retired from Woodward and Elam Insurance Co. in 1965. He was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and a 1926 graduate of Virginia Military Institute. He was also a member of Suffolk Elks Lodge, former president of Suffolk Lions Club, and a former member of the board of Directors of Fidelity American Bank, Suffolk Office. He was a former board member of the American Bank and Trust Co. Besides his wife, he survived by one daughter, Mrs. Brian E. Magee of Richmond; one son, James Adams Woodward of Lockhaven, Pa.; four grandchildren and one nephew. His remains will lie in state at his home until 1 p.m. Friday. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in Cedar Hill Cemetery by the Rev. James H. Newsom Jr., with R.W. Baker and Co. Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Donations may be made to the Nansemond-Suffolk Rescue Squad or the VMI Foundation.
