Woodward, 77, dean of the Suffolk bar and a Republican political leader who once ran for Congress from the 2nd District, died Sunday at a local nursing home following a long illness. Mr. Woodward was also an active businessman and church leader, until he became ill a few months ago. He had practiced law here since July 1, 1920. Mr. Woodward, long active in the local Republican party, ran for Congress in 1944, but was defeated. He was a founder and a director of First Federal Savings and Loan Association, a founder and part owner of the Suffolk City Transit Line, Inc., and a founder and trustee of Trinity Christian Church. He is survived by his wife, the former Anna Anderson of Farmville; a son. Thomas L. Woodward Jr., also of Suffolk and an associate of his father's law practice since 1969; a foster daughter, Mrs. Mary Louise Oliver, of Suffolk; a sister, Miss Marie Woodward of Suffolk; and a brother, Richard L. Woodward, also of Suffolk. A funeral service will be held Tuesday at noon at the Hill Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery. The family asked that flowers be omitted.
