He graduated from Lake Taylor High School in 1975. He attended Azalea Baptist Church where he accepted Christ and was baptized at the age of 16. Cliff entered the Norfolk Naval Shipyard Apprentice Program in 1977 and graduated as a Journeyman Machinist in 1981. He is now a Nuclear Machinist Foreman and plans to retire with 34 years of service in January 2012. Cliff and his wife, Gayle, were married in Azalea Baptist Church on May 26, 1979. They are blessed with two beautiful daughters, Cory and Lindsey. He became an active member of Azalea in 1995 and served as an ordained Deacon for many years, in addition to Sunday School Director, Nominating Committee Chair and a member of the Personnel Committee. He was also instrumental in revitalizing the men's ministry at Azalea. A major turning point in his Christian walk occurred when he attended the "Athens Area Walk to Emmaus" in Georgia. Cliff shares that this weekend literally changed his life and he came away from Georgia with a deeper understanding of his relationship with Christ and the importance of serving the church in the proper capacity. He began searching for opportunities to further his knowledge by participating in seminars and workshops as time allowed. Cliff and Gayle began thinking about building their retirement home in Wakefield many years ago but the plan was to wait for retirement. But with Cory living in Athens after graduating from the University of Georgia and Lindsey living in Norfolk and attending TCC, the question was "Way wait?" Diligently seeking God's guidance, the planning process began. All doors opened and six months later their house was sitting on it's foundation on Rocky Hock Road. In March 2008 Cliff moved in, as there was still a lot of finish work to do, and in August 2008 Gayle joined him. That August, Cliff and Gayle visited Rocky Hock United Methodist Church for the first time. From that very first visit, there was no question that God had led them there. Cliff had considered the possibility of going into the ministry after he retired from his government job, but God had other plans. Though there are two and a half years left until retirement, the possibility of the ministry is now a reality. Cliff has expressed a genuine desire to follow God's call and began this exciting journey. He is dedicated to serving and carrying on the legacy of enthusiasm and energy that has been inspired by Pastor Anne Beale and the congregations at Rocky Hock and Ivor United Methodist Churches. He is excited about the opportunity to be your Pastor and looks prayerfully toward the future and God's plan for this charge. Rev.
