The Association researched the John Pipkin in Surry County, VA in an attempt to see if the two were the same men. Pipkin Family Association Newsletter May-Jun 1996 pipkinusa.org John Pipkins in Surry County Virginia in 1682 Mrs. John B. Amadio is an active member of our association and she recently did some research in Surry County, VA records which provided some exciting information on a John Pipkin. Surry County was formed in 1652. It is located about 20 miles up the James River from Nansemond County which was formed in 1634. The Isle of Wight County is located between the two. The original Surry County Court Records have been transcribed and printed by Weynette Parks Haun. Book III of Surry County Virginia Court Records, (Part I: Order Book 1671-1691) covers the period of 1672-1682. On 7 January 1682 the court record recorded on page 391 reads as printed by Mrs. Haun, "Mr. Thomas Rumball haveing brought his accon to this Cort agt. Robt. Burgess for fowerteene hundred pds. of tobo & Caske being for a Horse bridle and sadle delivered the Defendts. Man upon the defts. note of Credit to the plt. which note the plt. haveing produced in Cort and also proved by the oath of Jno. PIPKINS that the deft. hath the sadle and the plt. makeing oath in Cort that he agreed for the aforesaid sume of fowerteen hundred pds. of tobo 7 Casks"... Eliza Timberlake Davis has also transcribed Surry County Records. Her book is "Surry County Records - Surry County Virginia 1652-1684" and indexed the book. The index shows PIPKEN, John, 61 and PITKIN, John page 76. Page 61 shows that on page 298 of the original Book I of the records that on "5 January 1665, John PINKEN, Planter makes John Salway his atty. Wits. John Hobourne, John Bidford." Page 76 of the same book provides data from page 309 of the original record and reads, "31 Aug 1668. John Barber makes Mr. Richard Lawrence his atty. in a debt Thomas Pitman. Wit. Peleg Dunstan, Thomas Gully, John PITKIN." This is exciting information and probably brings our John PIPKIN, or his father? to Surry Co, VA at least 22 years prior to the 1704 Quit Rents of Nansemond Co, VA.
