All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm LAND SALE BETWEEN WILLIAM BUTLER AND ARTHUR ALLEN IN 1697 KNOW ALL MEN by these presents that I, William Butler, of said county of Nansemond, son, heir of William Butler late, of Lawnes Creek Parish in ye said County of Surry for in consideration of forty shillings sterling: one thousand pounds of good tobacco in caske of a certain parcell of land conveying by estimate, eighty acres, be the same, more or less, scituate in said Parish of Lawnes Creek, ye said County of Surry aforesaid which said sum of money for tobacco are paid and land this day conveyed by Arthur Allen of ye said parish and County aforesaid to me and my heirs forever, have bargained, exchanged and sold and I do hereby for me, my heirs, forever bargain exchange, sell infeeoff transferr and confirm unto him, ye said Arthur Allen, and to his heirs, and assigns forever a certain parcell of woodland scittuate in ye said parish and county aforesaid containing and, by estimation, eighty acres , be the same, more or less, bounded west?/southeasterly by a bottom and marked trees and devides it from my other lands southerly on ye said meadow branch that devides it from the land of John Drew westerly on ye said land formerly belonging to Walter Taylor deceased: and northwesterly and northeasterly on ye said: Allen's own land. TO HAVE, TO HOLD ye said eighty acres of land more or less to him, ye said Arthur Allen, his heirs, & assigns forever in as full & ample maner to all intents and purposes as myself might or could have enjoyed, ye said land, and I do hereby obligate myself, my Executors, Administrators in ye said penall sum of one hundred pounds sterling payable to ye said Allen, his heirs, assigns on demand to Warrant and defend this, my sale of all and singular in ye premises with their appurtenances to him, the said Arthur Allen, to his heirs, and assigns forever against all and all manor of persons whatsoever by, from, or under? in deriving or pretending any claims, title or of thereto and when thereto required with give to him, or any of them, such farther, other lawfull assurance of all, singular ye said premises is by his or their learned councill shall be thought fitt. In testimony of all which I have hereunto set my hand and seale this 2nd of March 1697.
