Surry Man Was Next to Last Of Army Company 

  DENDRON, Feb. 21 - James Smith Avery, who died recently, was next to the 
last survivor of the famous Surry Light Artillery which served the Confederacy 
with distinction in the War Between the States.  He was 91 years old with a 
birthday next month. 

  Mr. Avery died as a result of injuries to his hip which were sustained when 
he stumbled over a rug in his home. 

  His wife suffered a similar injury shortly before her death five years ago.
