He was a retired Surry County farmer and a member of Carsley United Methodist Church. He was past president of Surry Ruritan Club, a member of Blackwater Sportsman club and a former member of the state Democratic Committee. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Fannie Mae Stallings Atkins; a daughter, Mrs. Laura Jean Atkins Sheffield of Waverly; a son, James E. Atkins of Richmond; a brother, Randolph G. Atkins of Petersburg and five grandchildren. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Purviance Funeral Home Chapel in Wakefield by the Rev. Samuel Askew. Burial will be in Waverly Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. The family request that expressions of sympathy take the form of contributions to Waverly Rescue Squad or Carsley United Methodist Church. ****************************************************************************** EDWARD M.
