He was a native and lifelong resident of Surry County. He was an employee of the Surry Lumber Company and a train engineer, being the engineer on the last run for the Surry Lumber Company railroad. He was the oldest member of the Dendron Congregational Christian Church and a charter member. He was also superintendent of the church school for over 50 years. He was the son of Thomas and Martha West Atkinson.* He is survived by his wife, Indella Wilcox Atkinson; a daughter, Mrs. W. Turner Judkins of Surry; one grandson, Julian D. Lewis of Surry; one sister, Mrs. Eva Anderson of Richmond. Funeral services were held in Purviance Funeral Chapel, July 11 at 2:30 with Rev. H.E. Crutchfield officiating. Burial was in the Wakefield Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers were men of the Dendron Christian Church. Active were James Leath, Wilson Cofer, Speight Atkinson, W.M. Atkinson, Garland W. Spratley, J.N. Barker, C.A. Anderson, Jr. and John L. Seely. Edward Thomas "Sam" ATKINSON, last S.S.S. The D.Certs. of bros Charlie & John give their mother as Margaret Ann West; bro Archie's gives Margaret West. They are also buried in Wakefield Cemetery. The D.Cert. & (donated, 1966) obit of bro Edward both give son of Thomas and Martha West Atkinson. They are also buried in Wakefield Cemetery Their father, Joseph Thomas ATKINSON, was a Confederate veteran, having risen from the ranks to become first sergeant & color bearer of Co. B, 10th VA Heavy Artillery. He applied for a pension in 1908.
