ATKINSON, OF SURRY COUNTY DIED OCT. 25TH John M. Atkinson, son of Joseph Thomas Atkinson and Margaret Ann West*, was born in Surry County July 24th, 1880, died October 25th, 1947 at Dendron, Va. He was a lifelong resident of Surry County. He is survived by two sisters - Mrs. Mattie Spratley Hart of Dendron and Mrs. W.L. Anderson of Richmond; three brothers, E.T., A.A., J.T. of Dendron. The burial service was conducted by Rev. J.M. Roberts and Rev. Carroll Beale at the Wakefield Cemetery. Active Pallbearers were Garland Spratley, Charlie Anderson, Seith Atkinson, Jesse T. Atkinson, William M. Atkinson and J.B. Nicolson, Jr. John M. Find a Grave Mem. #127133078 The D.Cert. & (donated, 1966) obit of bro Edward T. "Sam" ATKINSON both give son of Thomas and Martha West Atkinson. Sam is also buried in Wakefield Cemetery. Their father, Joseph Thomas ATKINSON, was a Confederate veteran, having risen from the ranks to become first sergeant & color bearer of Co. B, 10th VA Heavy Artillery. He applied for a pension in 1908.
