All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/va/vafiles.htm ************************************************ WILLIAM CORDIE AND MARY BAKER ANDREWS REMEMBERING - WILLIAM CORDIE ANDREWS (1893 - 1968) AND MARY BAKER ANDREWS (1903 - 1992) Cordie Andrews was born at Blackwater Plantation Place near Wall’s Bridge. He was the son of William Henry and Rosa R. Andrews. Born into a Rocky Hock Church family, he was very active in the church and held many positions in the church throughout the years. His wife was born on a farm adjacent to Surry Courthouse. After high school she attended State Teachers’ College (Longwood College). She returned to Surry County to teach school at Forest View which was located in sight to Rocky Hock Church (where Joe Hancock lives today). She rented a room from Ruth Rives at Oakland Plantation. While there she met and married Cordie, and they had four children. Mary taught the Naomi Bible Class for many years before her death in 1992. Two of the children remained in "Little Surry." Mary Elizabeth Rollings, their only daughter, was active and taught forces her to stop. One of their sons, Richard Andrews, is still faithful in serving Rocky Hock Church. They were a wonderful couple and devoted to their church and their family. Both are buried in the Rocky Hock Cemetery. Richard and Carol gave the big arched window and the lovely chandelier in the Fellowship Hall in memory of Cordie and Mary Andrews. Thanks to Richard and Carol Andrews for the picture and information. ******************************************************************************* Surry Farmer An Resident Succumbs at 75 William Cordie Andrews, 75, a lifelong resident and farmer of Sussex and Surry Counties, passed away on Wednesday, November 20, in a Richmond hospital after a long illness. Funeral services were held on Friday, November 22, at Purviance Furneral [sic] Chapel, Wakefield, with burial at Rocky Hock Methodist Cemetery in Surry County. The services were conducted by Rev. L.P. Bland and Rev. C. Vernon. The pallbearers were C.M. Ellis, R.M. Pond, O.L. Holt, Stanley Cooper, Frank Remorenko, Joe Eggleston, S.O. Rogers and Garland Goodrich. Mrs. [sic; Mr.] Andrews was a son of William Henry and Rosa Richardson Andrews. He was a member of the Board of Directors for the Prince George Electric Cooperative and a former member of the Surry County Welfare Board. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Mary Baker Andrews of Wakefield; three sons, W. Cordie Andrews Jr., the Sheriff of Surry County, J.H. (Jack) Andrews of Smithfield, and J. Richard Andrews of Wakefield; two brothers, Bernard B. Andrews and Rossie E. Andrews of Wakefield; and 11 grandchildren. ******************************************************************************* MARY LUCINDA BAKER ANDREWS WAKEFIELD - Mary Baker Andrews, 88, of Route 1, died Tuesday, March 31 at Louise Obici Memorial Hospital, Suffolk. She was the widow of William Cordie Andrews, Sr. and a Surry County native. She was the daughter of the late John W. and Maggie L. Hargrave Baker. She was a member of the Rocky Hock United Methodist Church, Wakefield and a graduate of Longwood College. Survivors include a daughter, Mary Elizabeth A. Rollings of Wakefield; three sons, W. Cordie Andrews Jr., Surry; John H. "Jack" Andrews, Gloucester; J. Richard Andrews, Wakefield; two sisters, Annie B. Seward, Elberon; Elizabeth B. Edwards, Smithfield; 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. A funeral service was held Thursday, April 2 at 11 a.m. in the Rocky Hock United Methodist Church officiated by Rev. Jess V. Staton. Burial was in the church cemetery.
