JOHN CLAUDIUS BAKER 

RESIDED IN SURRY, VA. 

  The Honorable John Claudius Baker (Ret.), 85, of Surry passed away 
Wednesday, May 13, 2015.  Born and raised in Surry, he was the son of the 
late John Hargrave Baker and Blanche Skinner Baker.  He was also preceded 
in death by his wife of 58 years, Diane G. Baker.

  Judge Baker served his country in the United States Army in Korea.  He 
was a graduate of both Virginia Tech and the College of William and Mary. 
Judge Baker was a past Vice-president and President of the 6th Circuit Bar 
Association, a member of Virginia Bar Association, American Bar Association, 
Virginia Trial Lawyers Association and the 6th Circuit Bar Association.  He 
was elected General District Judge for the 6th District and served as an 
attorney for the Surry County Public Schools.  After retirement, he enjoyed 
traveling, fishing and supporting his "Hokies".

  Left to cherish his memory are his children, Claudia B. Babb, John Alan 
Baker, and Monica B. Calhoun and her husband, Tim Calhoun; grandchildren, 
Sarah Rogers, Travis Yeager, Jennifer Hartman, Mallory Coggin, Sarah Calhoun, 
Trent Yeager, John Andrew Baker, and Avery Elizabeth Baker; nine great 
grandchildren and a sister, Joanne Hargrave Baker.

  The family will receive friends Friday, May 15, 2015 at R.W. Baker & Co. 
Funeral Home, 11414 General Mahone Hwy., Wakefield, VA 23888 from 6 to 8 p.m. 
A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 16, 2015 at St. Paul’s 
Episcopal Church, Surry with Rev. Jim Browder officiating.  Burial will follow 
in Oakwood Cemetery, Surry.  Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul’s 
Episcopal Church, c/o St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 156, Courtland, VA 
23837.
